Meet the Russell’s Viper – one of India’s most infamous venomous snakes. With its bold patterns and lightning-fast strike, this snake commands both fear and respect. But here’s the truth – it doesn’t want to harm you; it just wants to be left alone. Unfortunately, human-wildlife conflict puts both people and snakes at risk.

And that’s where snake rescuers step in—to safely relocate these misunderstood creatures, ensuring they don’t end up in harm’s way.

This one was rescued from Anju Bobby Sports Foundation and released safely nearby.

Rescue date: 4th March 2025.

Russell’s Viper fast facts

  • Scientific Name: Daboia russelii
  • Deadly but Patient: Unlike some aggressive snakes, Russell’s Viper often stays motionless, relying on camouflage until provoked.
  • Loud Hiss: When threatened, it produces an intimidating, loud hissing sound—like a leaky pressure cooker!
Not Just a Night Stalker: Unlike many vipers that are nocturnal, Russell’s Viper is active both during the day and at night.
  • Venom’s Double Trouble: Its venom affects blood clotting (hemotoxic) and can cause kidney failure—a dangerous combo.
Pup Factory: This species is viviparous, meaning it gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs, and can have 20-40 babies at a time!
  • Triangular Head, Oval Patterns: Easily recognizable by its triangular head and chain-like dark oval patterns running along its body.
  • Rodent Control Experts: They primarily feed on rodents, which ironically makes them frequent visitors to farms and human settlements.
  • Fast but Predictable Strike: Though quick to strike, they often follow a predictable pattern—raising their head before delivering a bite.
  • Can’t ‘Hear’ You: Like all snakes, they don’t have external ears but sense vibrations through the ground.
