Russell’s Viper fast facts
- Scientific Name: Daboia russelii
- Deadly but Patient: Unlike some aggressive snakes, Russell’s Viper often stays motionless, relying on camouflage until provoked.
- Loud Hiss: When threatened, it produces an intimidating, loud hissing sound—like a leaky pressure cooker!
Not Just a Night Stalker: Unlike many vipers that are nocturnal, Russell’s Viper is active both during the day and at night. - Venom’s Double Trouble: Its venom affects blood clotting (hemotoxic) and can cause kidney failure—a dangerous combo.
Pup Factory: This species is viviparous, meaning it gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs, and can have 20-40 babies at a time! - Triangular Head, Oval Patterns: Easily recognizable by its triangular head and chain-like dark oval patterns running along its body.
- Rodent Control Experts: They primarily feed on rodents, which ironically makes them frequent visitors to farms and human settlements.
- Fast but Predictable Strike: Though quick to strike, they often follow a predictable pattern—raising their head before delivering a bite.
- Can’t ‘Hear’ You: Like all snakes, they don’t have external ears but sense vibrations through the ground.
